This year I turned 49 years old. In less than one year, I’ll be 50. 50!! That’s half a century old. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather be 50 than dead, but still…50?!?! When I look back at all the milestones in my life there is one predominant thought. I didn’t accomplish anything on my own – not one thing. Everything I’ve ever done has been with the assistance, support, and encouragement of others. School, college, graduate school, career, raising children – I couldn’t have done any of it without the wonderful individuals in my life. Whether they’ve been there from the beginning (my parents, brothers and extended family) or have stayed for only a season (teachers, mentors, and friends), they’ve impacted my life for the better and helped shape me into the person I am – a person who loves the life she has and loves her job!
Why do I love my job, you ask? Because it’s my turn to offer support, encouragement, and assistance. The Advisors I work with are so talented, skilled, and motivated; it is a joy to be around them. I hope I can impact their lives in some way that is positive as I know they are impacting the lives of students. I also love that I still occasionally get to work with students. Believe it or not, being around students actually makes me feel younger! I love their enthusiasm and enjoy doing what I can to help them on their journey.
Life is hard, and messy, and fun, and scary, and exciting. None of us can do it alone. It is a privilege and honor to be a part of the life of others, no matter how great or how small.
