As a post-secondary education advisor, one thing I notice is that students don't always understand the different world that college and the college-going process can be.
They hear the terms thrown at them, sometimes in rapid fire, and they pretend to understand. They fill out the application or scholarship and never really fully know what it is they may be completing or even how it works.
Instead, they nod their heads and do what they are told.
But when they finally show up to college on the first day (if they even know to come on that day), the newness of the experience can be terrifying for them. Some will push through, but others may decide this isn't for them and walk away.
And all of this is even more prevalent for first-generation college students.
I guess the College Board noticed this trend too, and to help out these students who may be unfamiliar with all the processes involved with going to college, they created CollegeGo.
CollegeGo is an app which takes the students through a college-going information course, but it does so in an interesting way. With the potential to send "cheers" to other friends using the app, the ability to track your own performance, and just generally good information, this app is actually kinda fun to use.
I personally downloaded it to play around with it, and I have been really impressed so far. The full experience would take a few days to complete at minimum, and it might not work well for all students due to its detailed nature. However, I'd recommend checking it out!
As always, we will keep you up to date with cool and interesting resources as they come along! Everything that comes through this blog will end up somewhere on the website for future use, so take a look around if you have the time.
If you have or find a great resource for us to talk about and share with our students, let us know through the Contact tab. We'll be happy to look it over! Thanks for your help!
Until next time,
Let's be honest: remembering to do stuff is hard. With friends, athletics, clubs, homework, family, etc. constantly demanding our attention and time, it can get a little hectic trying to remember to do what we need to for our own futures.
That is exactly what UpNext helps with!
Created by "a team of education experts, ... a digital and design firm, and... a nonprofit that promotes sensible government policies," UpNext is a text-based reminder system that helps keep you up to date with the things you need to get done, like college applications and the FAFSA. UpNext even helps out with reminding you of important things after college, like paying off student loans!
The system is simple, personalized to you, and honestly, pretty cool for a government initiative. At the very least, it may be worth taking a look at.
